Europa League Winners To Get Champions League Place / More Transfer News

Good morning. I have precious little to look at across the many football websites this morning. One of the top stories on BBC Sport is of Titus Bramble suggesting he may or may not leave Sunderland. Reading that news fails to titillate me. Could there be a worse transfer story? Read more

Fulham Sign Amorebieta / Pellegrini To Manchester City

Good morning. It is quite staggering just how much change has happened in the Premier League over the past few days. Tony Pulis has "mutually" walked away from Stoke City, which actually means he was sacked without ceremony by Peter Coates. Arsenal have been linked with any striker that has a Read more

Jovetic To Arsenal / Kolo Toure To Liverpool / Tony Pulis Leaves Stoke

GOOD MORNING! Do you wanna know why I typed that in caps lock? Because Tony Pulis has "mutually walked away from Stoke City after chairman Peter Coates sacked him for a sh*t run of results." There's nothing "mutual" about Pulis' departure, he's been sacked. Why? Because Stoke City have stagnated Read more

Good morning. Real Madrid have officially announced what we've all been expecting since about November: Jose Mourinho is leaving Real Madrid after three years in charge, in which time he won the league and Copa Del Rey. Arsenal's Platform To Build On / Tottenham Worries

The contrasting situations between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur at the end of 90 minutes on Sunday, spoke volumes for the importance of Champions League football. On the one hand, Arsenal celebrated as if they had lifted a trophy, for which they have been criticised for. "Fourth is not a trophy, this just Read more

Oh To Be An Owl

Kind of a misleading article if you will as I am not a Sheffield Wednesday fan, though Saturday evening I found myself invited to the local pub (I say local, it took me ten minutes and I had to drive) by three die-cast Wednesday fans so for two hours I found myself in the shoes of a Wednesdayite. England Whimper Out The Europa League…

….time for a new approach from English clubs? I say this because in both the Man City and Liverpool matches I saw plenty of fight but no stab. It’s all well and good fighting with a plastic sword but you’ll get nowhere unless it’s sharp, made of steel and pointy if you get my drift! Liverpool committed players forward especially towards the end where if they had been playing a better team may have been punished on the counter late on.

Still, it was all the same from Liverpool; a diagonal ball to the forehead of Carroll in the hope he could connect with a header. He’s played a cameo in two matches for Liverpool and as bad as Braga are, they are not that stupid as to not think they should keep an eye on him! If Liverpool used other options as well as Carroll they may have had luck but they were clueless! Joe Cole looks a shadow of a player; he’s two seasons away from playing at Notts Forest and as for Glen Johnson, well, words escape me!

Now admittedly I can only account for the final half hour of the Man City game but it seemed much the same. All graft, no final edge.

So what exactly is letting English clubs down? We saw England’s best passing team outplayed by Barcelona at their own game, we saw Man United stutter to a win against Marseille and an embarrassing performance against a Championship team in Copenhagen. Arsenal aside, the emphasis on athletic players in England is embarrassing! It seems to be a common theme all over England and I’m talking right from Sunday League to Premier League; the only players coaches are interested in are massive built, athletic type players and awesome if you can make it work and in Chelsea’s case they managed to sustain that way of thinking for a couple of seasons but it can only be sustained for so long, as we now see Chelsea’s physical edge waning away like Superman after having ate Kryptonite for breakfast. The result for Chelsea concentrating their efforts on such players is that they have noone creative to make the difference. I look at none of that team and see a creative outlet whom I would pay to see.

Liverpool on the other hand two years ago were a pleasure to watch with Alonso, Mascherano, Gerrard and Torres yet who have they got now to replace that quartet? Poulsen, Lucas, Carroll and an injury prone and massively out of form Gerrard.

Big players do not win you games, it’s the vision for the pass required at certain times which win you games; Spaind and Barcelona are great examples of this and what are they doing? Ah yes, dominating football.

So, do you agree that building a team of athletes can only be sustained for so long? Romario certainly agrees with me when in an interview with FourFourTwo he stated ‘skill will always come on top’. Thanks Romario, I’ll leave the debating for you to decide…

See you in the comments!

Chelsea Drain Me, Plus Rio’s Career Is Coming To A Welcome End

On a night of nothing to do, I made myself watch the dead rubber match that was Chelsea and Copenhagen. Chelsea had already scored two away goals in the first leg and Copenhagen, with much respect, did not look like scoring one, let alone two to make the tie interesting.

I was nearly proved wrong on Copenhagen’s scoring credentials when N’Doye cracked the post after he wrong-footed Cech from a free kick. A good chance but you felt that their only threat was going to come from something like that and when Chelsea are happily smothering you with their defenders, corners and free kicks are hard to come by.

My groan is with Chelsea. They have been absolutely shocking after a storming start to the season and don’t look like improving. Where is the creativity coming from? Not Mikel, he can only pass sideways and back, while Ramires seems to day dream his matches away. Malouda is good, though I feel he’s too ‘bulky’ for a winger to be able to use his pace properly and don’t even get me started on Lampard! Smashing fifty yard Hollywood passes across the field does not make you creative, nor does it make you world class.

Chelsea were boring, predictable and wouldn’t have known what creativity was if a wet Salmon fish came upto to them wearing a board with the word ‘creativity’ on and the smart money says you take notice of a Salmon standing on two fins, wearing a billboard.

Dead rubber or not, Chelsea need to build up a head of steam to improve their season and they had a golden chance to do that at home to Copenhagen last night.

In other news, Rio Ferdinand once again has back problems. Now after the tv programme he did where he pranked various England stars before the 2006 World Cup I lost any respect I had for him. In the build up to the World Cup, one where we had a supposed ‘Golden Generation’, he was roaming about Manchester and London talking like Tim Westwood’s long lost brother and wearing the most ridiculous clothes. I also recall him calling Rooney; “brother”. Appalling behaviour. Also, in his last injury bout for Man Utd he was making a film with rapper pals 50 Cent and anybody donning a bandanna. I think Danny Dyer featured too, says it all really.

So, in a time where the country really wanted the players to dig in and be pictured with a ball constantly, he was arsing about ‘pranking’ team mates and when Man Utd really needed him, he was playing Director for a gangster film.

He is now King of Twitter, having banter with other footballers, which I’m not against, though he does constantly call everybody ‘bro’.

Brand Rio is coming to an end and frankly, it can’t come soon enough, never has a footballer been so half-arsed. Do your film making when you’ve retired, not during your career.
